Will a Future Clinton Administration Be Good for US Online Gambling?

With the 2014 congressional elections coming up on November 4, it is interesting to take a look at Hillary Clinton’s stance on the subject of online gambling regulation. While there has still not been an official statement by Clinton on whether she will make a second presidential run for the 2016 elections or not, analysts believe that the first option is very probable.

Views on Land-based Gaming

Clinton was supportive of land-based gaming back in 2000, although the case was specific. The region in question was Niagara and Clinton offered support for plans to build a new casino there, explaining that if a new casino will attract more tourists to the region which used to be a tourist capital for America – she will support it. In the same year, Clinton also supported plans for a tribal casino.

Online Gaming a Mixed Bag

With all that has to do with online gambling, Hillary Clinton’s views seem mixed. Clinton voted in favor of the SAFE Port Act in 2006 which also included the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 (UIGEA), something that deeply affected online gambling establishments in the country since then. Two years later in 2008 however, Clinton supported a study dedicated to determining whether online gambling can be safely regulated in the US.

Considering the later indication and the generally favorable positions shown by Clinton in questions of land-based gambling, a Clinton administration could very likely take favorable views on online gambling as long as safe solutions are put in check to prevent problem gambling and other issues. The projected high revenues of iGaming in regulated states like New Jersey and established online casinos opening online sites like Tropicana Casino just recently, might all serve as an important factor for favorable views on iGaming by a future Clinton administration.
